Who are you? What do you do?

My name is Ben Siekierski and I am an artist. Recently I’ve been exploring competitive swimming as an allegory for art making.

Where are you from?

I am from Denver, Colorado.

Your style in 3 words?

Tongue in cheek

Your weakness? Your strength?

Weakness: I get consumed by my work

Strength: I can make a great cup of coffee

 What makes you different?

That’s oddly hard question to answer, I’m different insofar as I’m the only one who can make the art I want to make.

When did you decide to become an author/artist?

I don’t think it’s really something you become, for me I have this instinctual need to create, I really think you’re born with it in you. When I’m away from the studio I’ll start making sculptures with whatever I have handy around me.

What do you find most fascinating about the creative process?

I find the leaps in thinking it takes to create anything fascinating. The way I see it we are all walking bags of soup filled with little tidbits of information and stimuli that coalesces into a work of art that then can become independent of the creator, it’s insane.

A few words about your favourite creation?

I think my favorite creation is a tiny painting I made in high school of a overweight demon with a “hello my name is” sticker on his chest. It’s sort of a dumb piece but it’s perfectly dumb I didn’t overthink it.

Someone else’s work that inspired or inspires you…

Currently I’m incredibly inspired by artists such as Calvin Marcus, Trenton Doyle Hancock , Chris Burden, and Tom Sachs, I love the sense of play that’s shown in their work, I’m also really interested in how each of these artists explore narrative and the self.

A new project coming up or an idea you want to work on?

I’ve recently been playing around with the idea of covering a whole room, floor to ceiling in tile as an installation, I figure that it would disorient the viewer by encasing them in this gridded system.

2018: Where are we going?

We’re definitely going somewhere, I had this philosophy professor that was convinced we were getting closer to a synthesis point.

When the going gets tough…

The Tough get going?

Your city’s favourite spots?

When in Denver you’ve always got to check out what shows Rule Gallery and Dateline have up they’re consistently putting up amazing exhibitions. Also you have to check out Forest Room Five, it’s definitely my favorite bar in town and it’s definitely some place you could only find in Colorado.

Do you have a vision?

Right now I just want to live in a world wherein Trump isn’t the President.

What would you do if you could change the World?

I’d find a cure for cancer.

Tell us about your future plans…

I’ve been playing around with chain link fence for a new body of work, I find that it’s properties as a transparent wall exciting!

Last but not least: what is your favourite Song?

Oh man that’s also a tough question, if I had to pick in this moment I’d definitely would have to “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” by Kendrick Lamar.
