Tell us a little bit more about yourself. Where have you come from? Where are you now? How did you get started making music? How would you describe your sound?
Well, I come from New York, where I was born and raised, and am currently living in Amsterdam. I have always been in or around music ever since I was a boy and found my function when I visited my older brother’s nightclub for the first time when I was about 14 or so… That was a real eye opener for me.
My sound, I would say is an amalgamation of all the different influences that I have had in my life, from classical music to electronic music of all kinds to rock ‘n’ roll and hip hop even. They all fit in there somehow although I think the classical side sticks out the most!
Whats the story behind your name?
– Well the first name is actually my own name, Varick. The second name I got because I think it is exactly fitting for the kind of music I want to produce, The Tontine. It has a very gritty vibe to it but cool as well. Growing up in a very historically enthusiastic family I as well love history with all my heart and I think it was only right that I would find a word like that to fit in with my musical career.
What inspires you?
– Beauty, of all kinds. Naturally in this case I would be inspired by making beautiful music and feel inspired by listening to others’ music. But otherwise all sorts of things make me very happy and its usually because I have found the beauty inside of something, whether it be a photo, a person, a skyscape/landscape, anyting really… And that drives me on immensely
What projects are you working on this year?
– This year, I am still working on my first EP… Something I have been working on for some time now but sadly (and I guess positively as well) I am a bit of a perfectionist so I want it to be exactly right when its done and I haven’t quite reached that point yet. But I can say I am very close!
What’s …good for breakfast?
– Soft boiled eggs, croissants (ham & cheese), cruesli chocolate and banana cereal.
…your worst habit?
Thinking too much
Your secret talent?
– Learning languages
your biggest regret?
– Don’t have one, hope I never do!
…. Your greatest achievement?
I’m afraid I still think I’m a bit too young to be talking about any great achievements yet, but I plan on having a lot to look back on when I’m older.
….the best thing about where you’re from?
My friends and family.
