Time for another Theme Week: Upcoming Architecture Worldwide. The week we will be focusing purely on architecture from around the world, focusing on one architectural practice per continent. Before starting the week with an exclusive interview between Indechs and the Seoul based architect Peter W. Ferretto, we will start introducing young architects from across the world, one per continent. First of all we will head over to South America, introducing Alejandro Aravena and his practice in Santiago de Chile.
Aravena, who has held visiting professorships at Harvard and the AA and is widely published, and has received numerous prizes. Since 2006, he is Executive Director of Elemental S.A, a company with especially social interest, working in projects of infrastructure, transportation, public space and housing, partnering with Universidad Catolica de Chile, and COPEC, Chilean Oil Company. Elemental’s projects work within tight policy restrictions and with few resources. The idea is to provide a set of conditions that allow the building units to be adapted and increase in value over time, redefining social housing as an investment not an expense.Later this week, Peter W. Ferretto will discuss his practice with us in more detail. Having studied in the UK and having worked for several leading architects, Ferretto decided to finally settle down in Asia and open his personal office in Seoul.
Throughout the conversation he will elaborate on this decision, the differences between the European and Asian market, its opportunities and consequences. Moreover, he will give further insight into his practice to which the understanding of architecture as a thinking process where concept and observation are fundamental to the process of generating spaces is, crucial.
