Who are you? Where are you from? What do you do?
I am Anja Groeschel, I live in Berlin and I am a storytailor.
You founded the Art Lovers Club in 2010. How did it all start?
It all started with a very a nice dinner on the rooftop of the Soho House. We were six women all working in the art business and we realized that there was no forum for professional dialogue between different players within the art world. Following this dinner, I commenced the organisation of events which the five other women supported in the beginning through networking the art world. The popularity of these events grew rapidly, through word of mouth and personal contact. And since September 2012 I have two fantastic partners, Christina Kohorst and Lena Winter, and we will continue growing.
What is the Art Lovers Club mission?
We believe that the key success factors in the art world are diverse knowledge and good contacts. That‘s what we try to offer through our events.
What kind of things does the ALC organize?
Activities include monthly private dinners and talks. We arrange exclusive events, such as studio and collection visits, as well as parties. The events programme includes themed events and travel excursions.
How can one get a membership? Any specific requirements? Is there a membership fee?
All new members are introduced and recommended by an existing member. And yes, there is an annual membership fee.
Can non-members participate at some of the events?
The visits and parties are open to non-members. In addition, for 2013 we are developing special panel discussion events, which will be open to the general public.
Why Berlin? Berlin + Art, a match made in heaven?
Well, if I had been living in New York, Paris or wherever and had had this nice dinner with the other women, the Art Lovers Club would have probably originated there. However, Berlin offers a unique starting point for such a club because of the high density of galleries and art institutions.
Are you planning to expand the ALC? Any other cities in mind?
Yes, but there is no rigid plan. I believe that such things evolve when you meet the right people at the right time.
What plans do you have for the future?
Continuing with what I am already doing. Developing and realizing my ideas, connecting with people and introducing cross-disciplinary dialogue.
Anything coming up soon, you want to tell us about?
The Art Lovers Club is planning interesting events in 2013. Definitely one of our highlights will be the exclusive trip to the opening of the Venice Biennale. However, we are already planning the trip after Venice which should hopefully excite members. So, just stay in touch to be the first to know!
